The companion book to the TV series seen on the Arts & Entertainment Cable Network
The American Civil War was the most exacting test that the United States, an independent nation for less than eighty years, had ever faced. In four years of terrible violence almost as many Americans were killed as in all the other wars the United States has fought before and since.
The Divided Union, the companion book to a major television series, tells the history of this war which began with cavalry chases and infantry charges and ended with slaughter by artillery and massed rifles on an epic scale. It saw increasing resort to trenches and earthworks, grim forerunners of the battlefields of northern France half a century later. Sadly, no European general seemed to learn the costly lessons it taught.
The social, economic and political implications of the war were immense. It settled once and for all the indivisibility of the United States. By preserving the Union, it transformed it into a nation. But the abolition of slavery led to racial prejudice and enduring civil conflict rather than a just and equal society in North and South. The war was the first media war as such with journalists swaying public opinion and the results of political elections. It was also the first to be photographed on any scale and many of the telling photographs in the book are contemporary, a remarkable document in themselves.
Illustrated with over 200 pictures in color and black and white and with 5 maps, The Divided Union is a lively and penetrating account of a war whose effects are still with us today. In oe of the conflict's darkest moments Abraham Lincoln said that by it: "We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last, best hope, of earth." After more than a century and a quarter there is still no final balance sheet of nobility and meanness and no final verdict of what was saved and what was lost.
