The lost mother turned out to be Lorna Moon, a newspaperwoman, screenwriter, and best-selling novelist, a woman who had been born in a small village in Scotland and who later became an exotic figure of silent-film-era Hollywood.  She lived about a mile from the house in which Richard grew up, and had a love affair that produced the infant boy who was adopted by Cecil and Constance in 1922.

With fairness and understanding, de Mille recalls his childhood.  His recounting of his investigation into his mother's life and death is suspenseful and poignant.  This story is both memoir and mystery, with a serious sense of history and a winning sense of humor.
