As they bar-hop, Jack gets separated from his brother -- who disappears.  Later, George is found. comatose and on the edge of death from a savage beating.  For the cops, it's just another mugging, but for Devlin, this is an outrage to be avenged.  He embarks on his own investigation, which takes him into the depths of the after-hours club scene:  into beer-stained dives and funky SoHo lounges where sex is the entertainment and cocaine is the menu.

Devlin's pursuit leads him to Robert Wexler, a cool, aristocratic sadist who rules like a spider over a web of illegal clubs.  It also leads him afoul of some of Wexler's important friends in the New York Police Department.  And when, finally, it leads him into a sexually chaged relationship with Wexler's mistress, the stage is set for a devastating confrontation.
