Senator Demarest saw it clearly; "Zinzin is a microcosm of our major dilemma abroad -- the short-term advantage vs. the long haul . . . .  I want people, when they think of the United States, to think of the Statue of Liberty -- and not the CIA!"

The jungle road ran some 300 miles from Ft. Paul, the capital of West African country of Kalya, to the village of Zinzin.  It was the route Lew Corleigh traveled weekly taking supplies to the Peace Corps Volunteers.

It wasn't much of a road, but it did lead Corleigh straight to the center of a vital and dangerous international issue.  Lew's involvement started only as a minor skirmish with Zinzin's petty tyrant.  But the ripples widened until Lew eventually found himself forced into reluctant leadership of an alarmingly growing battle, not only with entrenched Kalyan politicians, but with certain U.S. policy-makers.  Lew found a lot of impressive people, from Ft. Paul to Washington, D.C., taking an intense in his activities -- and a few in his earliest-possible demise.

Once again, Fletcher Knebel, master of the political thriller, has written a gripping novel -- of intrigue, corruption and political innocence, as timely as today's headlines.  Like Mr. Knebel's previous best-sellers, the plot of The Zinzin Road spirals rapidly from a deceptively quiet beginning to a high-level drama.
