FIRST EDITION
Here, in one hefty, information-packed volume, is everything you need to know to successfully grow all kinds of indoor plants, from the familiar to the exotic, from the easy to the fussy. Not only is it a clear, instructive, and unusually complete guide, but it is also, uniquely, a pleasure to read.
Over 250 different plants, grouped by family, are individually discussed in Part One. For each, the author provides specific details on light, warmth, humidity, soil and watering requirements; identifying features and seasonal growth patterns; advantages and problems. He covers fully such "standards" as palms, ferns, gesneriads, pelargoniums, begonias, cacti and other succulents, bromeliads, ivies and bulbs, as well as a number of easy-to-grow exotics that are often overlooked altogether: cycads, fragrant plants, night-blooming plants, orchids, miniature roses, bamboos, and carnivorous plants.
Part Two, on overall care, tells you what questions to ask when buying a plant; how to select the right soil and mix and pot and when to water, fertilize and prune; how much light (natural or artificial) and humidity to provide; how to recognize and get rid of pests; and how to garden in a terrarium. A separate, and invaluable, chapter deals with one of the most enjoyable facets of growing houseplants: growing more of them. Raising new plants from scratch is the most inexpensive way to build up a collection, as well as -- with the guidance of the author -- simplicity itself.
Among other highlights of Grow It Indoors are probably the most extensive cross-index available of common plant names, which often vary from region to region; a beginner's guide to classical Latin and Greek nomenclature; and a detailed catalog of plant and equipment sources. And, throughout, the book includes enough basic botany -- painlessly and entertainingly conveyed -- to enable you to really understand the whys and wherefores of plant growth.
The product of a lifelong delight in growing plants, Grow It Indoors is a book to read in any order that suits you best. It is a book that will broaden your pastures -- it will tempt you from a philadendron to a palm tree, a miniature rose, a flowering bromeliad -- and it is a book to enjoy. It is illustrated with over 100 line drawings by Susan McNeill.
