Description : This concert celebrating the 35th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s Papacy was performed on January 17, 2004, to a standing room only audience in the Vatican’s Sala Nervi auditorium. The performance honored the Pope’s lifelong commitment to interfaith understanding and outreach to the three Abrahamic faiths. Pope John Paul II, Rav Elio Toaff and Imam Abdulawahab Hussein Gomaa were in attendance as well as other representatives of the Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths.
Sir Gilbert Levine conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the first American orchestra to perform at the Vatican for Pope John Paul II, in the presentation of three movements from Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection” and John Harbison’s Abraham, a piece especially commissioned for the occasion. Joining Maestro Levine and the Orchestra were soloists Ruth Ziesak and Birgit Remmert, the Ankara State Polyphonic Choir, the Krakow Philharmonic Choir, the London Philharmonic Choir, and members of the Mendelssolm Choir of Pittsburgh.
In an introduction preceding the concert, Maestro Levine explains how this monumental concert was conceived, his selection process for the artist and the musical compositions that were chosen and he also takes the viewer on a tour of rarely seen holy sites of Rome including the Great Synagogue of Rome, the Grand Mosque of Rome and the Pope’s private apartments in the Vatican.
