Side 1 Balance of Terror:
"Captain Kirk is about to perform a wedding ceremony in the Enterprise chapel when the Romulan attack begins.
The starship has been conducting exercises in the Romulus-Remus neutral zone which has been quiet since the once-formidable Romulans suddenly withdrew fifty years earlier after decades of warfare. Suddenly, one of their vessels, invisible to Federation sensors, roars out of nowhere, to challenge the Enterprise. Kirk and Spock quickly find themselves in a duel of wits and courage with the commander of the alien ship. Nobody, in fact, had ever seen a live Romulan.
Only a few remains had been recovered during the bloody Romulus-Remus conflict, and as Spock observes, even the Vulcanite race claims to have no knowledge of the Romulans. Kirk soon learns that the obscure Romulans were not idle during the years of self-imposed isolation and their technological breakthroughs with new weaponry, have made them formidable foes once again. Kirk orders pursuit and a deadly interstellar chess game begins. The balance of terror between Kirk and his unseen Romulan counterpart rests on a single firing button. Who will blink first and cross the edge of galactic war?"
Side 2 Mirror, Mirror
"Kirk's mission: to convince the Halkan Council to let the Federation mine dilithium crystals on its planet. An untimely magnetic storm wreaks havoc with the Enterprise's transporter while Kirk, Bones McCoy, Scotty, and Uhura are being beamed up from the meeting with the Halkans, and a malfunction causes the landing party to be caught momentarily enroute.
Spock, now at the controls of the Enterprise, soon discovers that the four who return to the ship are not quite what they appear to be. Our beloved crew members have exchanged places with their alternate-universe counterparts from an alternate-world Enterprise. The real Kirk and party find themselves on a pirate spaceship from a violent, terror-ridden society where advancement comes not from competence but moving up the ladder of rank by murdering the "rung" above. Spock is challenged by the switch and must get the alternate four off his Enterprise post haste - and find the "real" ones, not only for their safety, but to prevent the slaughter of the peace-loving Halkans at the hands of these interplanetary barbarians."
