" An Unmarried Woman is a sensitive and poignant film about Erica, a seemingly happy woman whose husband suddenly divorces her after seventeen years of marriage. With a strong theme of optimism, the story follows Erica as she struggles to create a new life for herself and enters into a new relationship with another man.
Jill Clayburgh triumphs in her portrayal of Erica, one of the most difficult and demanding screen roles ever written. Erica, an attractive middle-aged woman who works part-time in an art gallery, finds her marriage ended abruptly when her husband tells her he's leaving her for another younger woman. She is terribly disoriented at first, but it isn't long before the bitterness and anger surfaces as she tries to adjust to life alone. Erica's greatest fear has suddenly become a reality: like her three best friends, Elaine, Sue, and Jeanette, Erica is now a divorcee - AN UNMARRIED WOMAN. Her bitterness has resulted in blatant hostility towards any men who express interest in her. Erica takes a positive step when she begins seeing a psychiatrist, Tanya. With Tanya's encouragement and patience, Erica's long represented emotions come to surface.
Tanya suggests she start dating and try to overcome her hostility towards men. Erica enters the single world with a little uneasiness but a rugged determination to make the best of it. She experiments with one-night-stands but finds them very unfulfilling. Her last affair with an acclaimed Soho artist, Saul, develops into much more than Erica had expected.
There comes a turning point in Erica's and Saul's relationship when he asks her to spend a summer with him on vacation away from New York. Her new independence is threatened and Erica faces a crucial dilemma. Her acceptance of the offer may end her career but her rejection of it may end their relationship. The dilemma is happily resolved when Erica and Saul comprimise and agree to see each other on weekends. With a new career and a new love, Erica is very happy with her status as AN UNMARRIED WOMAN. "
