The huge stones of the great wall of Jerusalem glittered white under the moon.  Eleven men gathered around one man to listen to His words, words which often perplexed them although they believed He had been sent to lead them.  He spoke simply of what they should do and what they should believe when He would no longer be with them.  They had expected Him to free and avenge His people with hordes of sword-bearing angels.  Instead He spoke to them of the power of love, while the powerful of the land schemed.

They knew that one of their company, the money-keeper, had left their Passover supper suddenly.  Two of them knew why.  Later they would all know that he had gone to betray his Lord.  For Annas, whose power in Judea could make even Rome anxious, and his son-in-law, the high priest Caiphas, feared the growing popularity of the gentle Galilean who had driven out the moneychangers who brought revenue into their Temple.

Jesus knew He was to die, He knew He was to die betrayed, and He knew He was to die suffering as a man.  As we follow His last day on earth, His divinity and human sides are constantly juxtaposed, culminating in the terrible hours when His divinity lay before and behind Him, and He was left alone to endure the agony of the cross as a man, in order to point the way to man's salvation.

Jim Bishop, author of The Day Lincoln Was Shot, has written this book with reverence and belief.  His understanding of men in political life, his studies of the Roman as well as the Jewish worlds of the time, and his flair for bringing a scene to life -- stirring the echoes of events which happened long ago -- make the book extraordinary.

These last hours in the life of Jesus marked, for those who believed in Him, the end of the Old Testament and the beginning of the new.  Bishop has re-created them with a sense of contemporary drama; he writes with dignity.  In these pages we see Christ as a man, but preserving always the depth of divine mystery.  As the book moves from Christ's human life to His life everlasting, it will move the reader to greater understanding, and, it may be, to greater faith.
