The Duster's whole life had been one long game with the law.  He had been tried and acquitted five times for robbery, and no one knew the names of all the famous gunmen he had dropped or laid away for repairs of some sort.  He and his partner Hector Mannes had done a hundred jobs together until they walked into the trap set for them in an Idaho bank.  A long rifle shot got Mannes, but before he died he made Duster promise to have his ashes buried in the cemetery of the little town of Christmas.  Lamont, the minister, swore that this was never going to happen, but Duster bided his time.  He settled down, assuring everyone that he was going straight.  And while he was working out a way to outwit Lamont, he fell in love with the minister's pretty daughter, Marguerite.

But when a stagecoach was held up and a wave of violence struck in the Christmas hills, people wondered if it was the work of the slim young gunman.  Then real trouble came for the Duster in the shape of an old enemy.  Two paths lay in front of the Duster -- one would take him to Marguerite, the other would send him back on an outlaw's trail.  He had to make his decision before he faced a last showdown with his past.
