Dell Shannon is back with the thirty-fourth installment of her highly popular Luis Mendoza mystery series.  As always, colorful Lt. Mendoza and his Los Angeles Police Department colleagues are assaulted by the full panoply of big-city crime, ranging from the heinous to the humdrum, the vicious to the misguided, the diabolical to the pathetic.

In Exploit of Death, Mendoza breaks one of the cardinal rules of police work when he becomes emotionally involved in the case of a young Frenchwoman whom he and his wife, Alison, meet by chance while returning from a European vacation.  The clues to her mysterious death lead him to Paris, when he'd really rather be back home in the hills above Burbank with Alison, the twins, baby Luisa, and Mairi MacTaggart.

Meanwhile, a number of other crimes baffle Mendoza and his division.  A dying old man is smothered in his hospital bed; a Hollywood matron disappears while on a visit to a sick friend and is found murdered; a grandmother who runs a small store is robbed and killed in what looks like an inside job.

But warm home lives and professional camaraderie sustain Mendoza and his officers -- Palliser, Higgins, Hackett, Wanda Larsen and all the rest -- against the emotional strains and physical dangers of the job.
