Reporters who play the make-it-interesting game with the greatest zeal are often the ones most handsomely rewarded.  Some who cover and comment upon the actions of senators, congressmen, Cabinet members, and the senior White House staff are paid considerably more than those they are paid to watch.  (An interesting situation in which society pays more for the watchdog than for the house.)  Thus, members of the press engage in the most basic and pervasive of human motivations:  greed and ambition."

Jody Powell also explains how and why a "liberal" press helped destroy an administration supposedly sympathetic to its views.  And he sets forth what he believes the role of the Washington press corps really should be.
