Street Cops
by William Klasne

Publisher:  Prentice-Hall, Inc.
Copyright:  1980

He was the Rookie.  Dressed in shimmering blue and sparkling brass.  Eager to enforce the law and uphold the peace.  His assignment:  learn from the veterans, learn the ways of the street.  It was to be quite an education . . .

Street Cops is a hard-hitting, unadorned novel about policemen and the work they do -- and choose not to do.  Written by a former cop, it is a riveting, action-packed story focusing on the experiences of a rookie as he adapts to the "real world" of the Chicago streets, far removed from the theory and idealism of the Academy.

By the end of his first year, the Rookie is introduced to every corrupt game imaginable, from taking bribes for not reporting "domestic disturbances" to preying on couples caught making love along the lakefront.  He's exposed to the thousands of freebies, the break-ins committed by the policeman on the beat, the cop groupies turned on by the uniform.  Uncontrolled passions and the bloodshed of the streets become part of his daily reality, and through a terrifying act of violence he meets the woman he loves -- a woman whose raw, honest emotion and steely will more than match his own.

In this searing, powerful novel set in the street cop's world, the emphasis throughout is on realism:  on the everyday heroism of capturing murderers, apprehending sex criminals, saving battered wives; and on corrupt cops, playing the games some police men play in their pursuit of money and power vs. the idealistic cops, walking the thin line between both worlds, risking their lives to fight the corruption within their own ranks.  As the Rookie moves among them, he is forced to choose his own direction, to decide between the path leading to honor or material reward.  For, in the final showdown, he is the only one who can decide which morality is right for him.

Accentuating the venality of the times, former policeman William Klasne emerges as a compelling, important, and unforgettable writer, fingering a basic dilemma within our society we can no long choose to ignore.
